A sad day: International organization to monitor US election
I’m sure I’m not the only American who is embarrassed to learn that an international organizations will be monitoring the US election in 40 states next month, because of Tea Party-driven voter suppression efforts.
It used to be that the United States was the standard bearer for freedom and democracy, that we were the country others looked to for help and guidance on how to run a free and honest election.
But no more and it’s a very sad thing.
Due to the rise in voter suppression efforts by the Republican Party, the ACLU, NAACP and other civil rights organizations have requested that the [OCSE] monitor this year’s general election, in fear that millions could be harassed or even forbidden from voting.
The Organisation of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will deploy observers to forty states across the country to monitor the election process from voter registration to post-election administration
A bit more from the Guardian:
American civil rights groups have appealed to the world’s biggest election monitoring organisation over concerns about controversial changes in voter registration ahead of the November 6 White House poll.
The eight civil rights group expressed their worry that millions, including those on low income as well as minorities, could be excluded from the vote for the presidency and for members of Congress.
They raised the issues during a meeting on Tuesday in Washington with representatives from the Organisation of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which represents 56 states in Europe, Central Asia and North America.
What’s sad is not that they will be here, but that they have no standing to challenge results. They will change nothing. Vote fraud due to prejudice has a long, long history in the U.S.; there hasn’t been an election this century where it hasn’t been alleged that it altered the outcome and the dirty tricks being used now were perfected by long use. Ask any black person whether this stuff is new. Or is this just a lament that the dirty laundry is now out where anyone can see it?
Mostly a lament that it’s gotten so bad that we appear to need international observers.
