Action Alert: Encourage your Reps to attend upcoming Secular Coalition briefing
Edwina Rogers of the Secular Coalition for America shares this Action Alert:
In less than two weeks, the Secular Coalition for America will holds its first Capitol Hill Briefing [http://secular.org/files/briefing-20121001.pdf] for members of the House of Representatives. This is a chance for the lawmakers that represent you to hear from scholars and leaders in the secular movement-and to learn more about the issues important to our secular community. But to make it successful, we need your help.
Can you send an email to your U.S. Representative’s office urging them to attend the October 1 briefing? [http://action.secular.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=11646]
Despite the prevalence of religion in modern-day politics, today nearly one in five Americans are “nones”, those of us who do not identify with any religion–that’s equal to the number of American mainline Protestants. Furthermore, nontheists outnumber many religious groups in our country, including Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Episcopalians, and others.
Even as our demographic grows, we have been largely ignored by the lawmakers who were elected to represent all Americans-including nontheists. If we want to be included, if we want to be heard, if we want to affect legislation, we need to take an active role in educating lawmakers. Start today.
Encourage your lawmaker to attend this briefing now.
