Two-term (Republican) Governor of New Mexico (1995-2003), Gary Johnson has been labeled by some (including himself) as “America’s most fiscally-conservative governor”. Johnson is also a successful entrepreneur.
Issues:
Johnson’s website lays out his positions on many issues in a clear and concise manner.
A few specific areas:
Abortion rights: Women should have the right to make decisions during pregnancy until the fetus is viable . . . but “all life is precious”. It appears Johnson is trying to say something for both the pro- and anti-choice camps. He provides no statement on contraception. He believes that stem cell research should not be government-funded, but does not suggest outlawing it.
Marriage equality: Government should allow same-sex marriage.
Immigration: Johnson favors streamlining legal immigration and permitting a two-year grace period for illegal immigrants to obtain a work visa, which would then allow normal access to apply for permanent residency or citizenship. He proposes securing the border in part by legalizing marijuana to reduce the US-Mexico drug trade, and supports a “one strike and you’re out” rule for illegal immigrants who break other laws.
More to come!
Latest news about Gary Johnson:
He needs to spell out, in detail, his immigration control “how to” ideas.
I’ve added what he’s put out, Clare, but I agree that it’s not terribly detailed.
