Ron Paul – Bio and Updates

Ron Paul

National Poll Position: 4/24/2012 – Romney has expanded his lead in the RealClearPolitics average, hitting a new personal record of 50.6% support, or a 32.6 point lead. That’s sure to widen following tonight’s 5-state sweep by Romney.

Santorum is still found in the recent polls, and still holding second in the average at 18%; and Gingrich and Paul in a virtual dead heat for the bottom with 17.8% and 14.6%, respectively.

Which will be the “biggest loser”? If we look at delegate counts, Paul is assured of that dubious honor. But checking tonight’s five state primaries, it’s not quite so certain.

Ron Paul came in ahead of Gingrich in four of the five states! I suppose Gingrich can take some comfort in at least beating Santorum in four states as well . . . small comfort, given that Santorum is no longer in the race, and still managed to beat Newt in Pennsylvania. Oops.

Gingrich has promised to stay in the race until the end, claiming he will bring “new ideas”. This would be a welcome contrast to his performance so far, where he simply has regurgitated “same old ideas”. Now that he’s been clobbered by Romney, Paul, and Santorum, will he finally drop out, or continue to embarrass himself with his slow-motion trainwreck of a campaign?

I’m hoping for the latter.

Bio:

Ron Paul is a physician from Texas serving his twelfth (non-consecutive) term in the US House of Representatives. His latest stint has been uninterrupted since 1997.

He was the Libertarian Party candidate for President in 1988, and received approximately 0.5% of the popular vote. He ran for the Republican nomination in 2008, withdrawing in June after several record-setting fundraising efforts but disappointing performance in early primaries. His effort was hindered in part by the resurfacing of the “newsletter controversy” — a newsletter published under his name, apparently ghostwritten by Lew Rockwell, Jr., containing racist rants. Paul had previously denounced the writings in 2001, but the controversy became news again with fresh accusations of bigotry.

Issues:

Nicknamed “Dr. No”, Paul is known for voting against nearly any bill which expands the role of government.

Gold Standard: Paul advocates a return to the gold or silver standard — read a bit on the possible consequences HERE.

Government Regulation: Paul also advocates for the elimination of the Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Reserve, and Department of Education, and the emasculation if not elimination of the Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration.

Health Care: Paul believes that nobody is under any obligation to assist in the health care needs of others. Instead, Paul says the poor or severely ill should rely upon the charity of others: “In the days before Medicare and Medicaid, the poor and elderly were admitted to hospitals at the same rate they are now, and received good care. Before those programs came into existence, every physician understood that he or she had a responsibility towards the less fortunate and free medical care was the norm.”

Promoting Quackery: Paul wishes to “stop the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) from interfering with Americans’ knowledge of and access to dietary supplements and alternative treatments.” In other words, allow producers of snake oils to promote their unproven health benefits with no testing or evidence required, by eliminating any oversight or regulation.

Abortion: Paul is unwaveringly pro-life, believing that life begins at conception, and abortion at any stage (this would include some forms of birth control, like the Pill or IUDs) is murder. He advocates for overturning Roe v. Wade and passing a “Sanctity of Life Act” defining life as beginning at conception.

Faith: Paul is a devoted Christian. His Statement of Faith is available HERE.

7 Responses to Ron Paul – Bio and Updates

  1. No mention of Ron Paul on a secular news site would be complete without mention of his science denialism, notable more so that he is a licensed physician: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPoCsC8VT9g Let's not also forget his long-running newsletter full of racist nonsense: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8aEGs0WLEc The "Bio", above, may be blank but our knowledge of this small-town doctor with his backwater racism and outdated thinking on matters ranging from financial planning to family planning is well-known.

  2. Luno, that racist shit is for the birds. Not convincing at all.

  3. Everyone is intilted to their opions – I believe in GOD and pray for peace on his earth and goodwill = PERIOD = I submit that all countries religions and cultures be left alone – Who are we to say ours is the only way??????

    • The various popes have been praying for peace in the Middle East for the last 60 years and you are claiming that prayer works? So this entity who you are praying to, made the entire word in 6 days and cannot sort out a small problem in 60 odd years? Takes a lot to believe that.

  4. To answer your prayers for peace, God would have to destroy the major obstacle to world peace, religion!
