Newt Gingrich: Pope is Superior to President
Some may wonder if a Catholic president would answer to the Vatican.
It sure looks like Newt Gingrich would; he insists that the American government should not be able to put any limits on the Catholic Church’s activities!
Gingrich accused the Obama administration of waging "war on religion" and Robinson later asked Gingrich if he really meant to use the word "war" and gave him an opportunity to take it back and clarify.
But Gingrich was having none of it, standing by his use of the phrase while accusing the Obama Administration of believing that President Obama is superior to the Pope and being part of a half-century long campaign by "secularists [to] get between man and God":

Specifically, Gingrich says:
I think that it’s very clear that this is an administration which believes that secular government – they believe that the President is superior to the Pope in the ability to define what the church is allowed to do.
Which sure seems to mean Gingrich would be the opposite; leading government away from restricting the Church’s activities, and allowing for the degradation of the religious liberty of all non-Catholics.
Thanks for sharing, Newt!
I think that President Obama is not trying to get between man and God. He is trying to to a very difficult job of ensuring that no matter what Americans believe they will be treated fairly. This is what sets him apart from the republican candidates that are so wrapped up in there religion that they cannot be impartial for those of us who do not believe in any god.
Wow, amazing – you say:”Which means Gingrich would be the opposite” as if it were an obvious logical and well reasoned extension to what Newt said. Happen to notice that you are associating the title of the article to your conclusion? That seems extremely unfair to most of us. With the issues related to the Catholic Church the pope is the leader, no question. We would have serious problems as a country if suddenly Obama would be interested in dictating church doctrine. He does seem to be trying to force the chuch to change. I do not like it, but the President has the authority to try (assuming that We the People want him to) as the Church/Pope has the authority to resist.
Certainly. However, when it comes to matters of US government, the President is the leader, and the Pope has no legal authority.
Please provide examples of Obama “trying to force the church to change”. Note: Examples of Obama “expecting the church to abide by the same laws as everyone else” is not the same as “trying to force the church to change”.
To quote: With the issues related to the Catholic Church the pope is the leader, no question. And yet the Catholic church is not above the laws of the United States and the Catholic church has right to demand that the laws of the United States bow to it. Meaning, for example, if the Catholic church doesn’t want to marry gays that’s fine..that’s the churches choice..but it has no right to tell the state to not marry gays. And it has no right to demand that laws regarding contraception bow to it. Oh and by the way..that little law that the Catholic church so objected to regarding that it be required to provide contraception? That law has been in effect since December 2000. And the social conservatives never once kvetched about it. So tell me..why did they suddenly start worrying about it when the Scary Black Man in the White House reiterated the rule?
