GOP takes lead in latest Zogby poll
In Zogby Interactive’s latest poll of likely voters, the support for a “generic Republican” Congressional candidate once again took the lead over the “generic Democratic” candidate, a shift from recent previous poll results.
Zogby president John Zogby comments, “Republicans continue to a hold a solid lead among independent voters in the Congressional generic ballot, and Democrats seem unable to solidify the same level of support from their party base that Republicans are consistently getting. If both those trends continue, Nov. 2 will be a joyous night for Republicans.”
The survey of 1,963 likely voters conducted from Oct. 12-14 has Republicans leading the Congressional generic ballot preference over Democrats, 49%-40%. A previous Zogby Interactive poll concluded on Oct. 11 showed the two parties tied at 45%-45%.
The percentage of voters approving of the President’s job performance is now 44%, down from 49% in the previous poll.
Zogby notes an interesting trend: The defection of self-identified Democrats.
Much of the drop for both Democratic Congressional candidates and President Obama came among Democratic voters. In the Oct. 11 poll, the percentages of Democrats approving of Obama’s performance and saying they would vote for Democratic Congressional candidates were both 88%. The latest survey has 79% of Democrats approving of the job Obama is doing and 80% choosing Democratic Congressional candidates.
The poll also found that the overall approval of Congress is at 20%, and 60% of voters believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction.
