Florida church to hold Quran-burning
Dove World Outreach Center members show their Christian love.
Dove World Outreach Center is a non-denominational evangelical church in Gainesville, Florida. They have announced a special celebration of the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks . . . something that will show Christian love, reduce hatred between people of different religions, and lead toward greater understanding around the world. Or not.
Dove will host “International Burn a Quran Day” on September 11, 2010. Pastor Terry Jones says the idea came, in part, from the recent success of “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day”. He comments that “We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn,” and that burning the holy books of another religion will provide Muslims an opportunity to convert.
Jones missed the point of Everybody Draw. That event, in response to the irrational attacks (including physical assaults, attempted murder, attempted arson, and successful murder) on Western cartoonists, authors, and filmmakers who drew or otherwise criticized Muhammad, Islam’s prophet, was intended to communicate to radical Islamists that Westerners would not cave to their demands of censorship.
International Burn is not about freedom of expression. It is about hatred of Islam, not just the radical actions of some Muslims.
Jones and his congregation have chosen to take an action that will not convert Muslims to Christianity. It will only serve to fan the flames of hatred, enraging even moderate Muslims.

awesome. i live in gainesville so i know that these people fucking suck. they are responsible for turning a campaign to stop discrimination based on sexual preference in the workplace (and housing) into an ugly argument about whether men should be allowed in women's (specifically prepubescent white children's) restrooms. fuck these ignorant shits.

There are crazies in every religion but this…… well, a dose of hardcore hate from some "good" christians. These "christians" burning the Quran makes all christians look bad just as al-Qaeda makes all people of the muslim faith seem like terrorists. Really, they are burning the Quran in order to get people of Islam to convert? Why do christians always try to get people to convert? I can't count how many times I have tried to be converted (I'm Jewish) so I'm a prime target. This would not go down in the UK, thank G-d I live here now. For stupidity and hate I do believe there needs to be something in place to protect the ones on the receiving end of this type of nonsense.

I don't believe there was any intent on actually burning the books. it was more of a publicity stunt to highlight the severe tendancies of muslim dominated nations. Burn a bible or a torah and spark outrage and debate, burn a quran and spark the deaths of thousands of innocents. sounds like a religion that needs to be exposed for what it is!

There is a memorial in Berlin, next to Humbolt University, where the Nazi’s held there biggest and most famous book burning. Beside the memorial, there is a quote that reads: “Where they start with burning books, they will end with burning people.” The quote was originally about the Spanish Inquisition. But it applied well to the Nazi’s, and let us not forget they were just a radical group in a completely civilized society. There is no society which is above such a transformation.

I'm a Christian, and this makes me sad. These Christians do not represent me. They are foolish. This kind of activity does far more harm to Christianity than it ever does to the Muslim faith. I have a feeling world is slowly drifting towards another period of madness. They can burn all the Qurans they want. What they cant do is burn the Quran which has been memorized by many Muslims word for word with great precision. It has been one of the only books to ever be memorized from front to back. Being a Muslim requires belief in the Old Testament as well as all the other religious books stated in Islam.

I guess I would be what people call a "moderate Muslim," and yes, I have to say that I am very close to being enraged. However, the sadness I feel overwhelms my anger. Its easy to see that radicalism from any religion does nothing but breed anger, and the truth in that concept simply makes me depressed. Our Prophet told us to always take the middle ground in all matters (except the oneness of God, which is uncompromisable to us), and to never live in an extreme manner. Quran says that if someone kills a human being without a justified reason, it will be just like killing the entire humanity, and the Quran also says that if you save someone from a wrongful death by any means, it equals saving the entire humanity: “Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. I am a college student that is not particularly religious but sick at the thought of the ignorgance held in this country. I was raised one religion (didn't really practice it) and had many friends of different religions. I am fortunate enough to respect all people and their beliefs but am angered by extremists whether they be Muslim, Christian or otherwise. This group in Florida are extremists. People like them are who spread hatred in the world and cause other extremists to retailiate, only leaving issues unresolved and a string of bodies a long the way. I don't think these people have any clue what they are doing. Like I said, they are ignorant of anything past their nose and choose to stay that way out of fear.
Perhaps if we look at this from another angle we can reduce the Amount of foam dripping from our mouths. So let's look at things like this: 1. Terry jones is an asshole. Without a doubt. Burning the koran is a deliberately Inflammatory act and I'm sure he knows exactly what will happen 2. Unfortunately for the islamic world, the very predictable response to this (as of yet not done) Book burning will be violence and hate, which may or may not be justified (just leave it at that, and finish reading before you go ballistic ladies and gents) 3. Bigoted christians and other groups will take the violent and hate filled response, and use it to further justify the position they have already taken…ie: look, they burned an embassy and killed innocents in response, they really are the devil! (Sort of a form of preaching to the choir id say) 4. The net result is further divisiveness. Remember, there are folks on both sides just acheing to turn this whole thing into a holy war, and some who already consider it so. So, if we take these points as a given, what do we rational people do? I personnally don't give a damn for religion at al, and these controversies take up too much of our time and attention when we should be concentrating our efforts as humans toward something a little less trivial….so… Muslims: yeah this guy sucks, get over it, we have freedom of speech. Allah Tabarak O Talla says that HE is the only GOD of the whole Cosmos, even those who defy HIM and those who want to burn HIS Quran, which is meant for the guidance of mankind in all spheres of life. The Quran confirms the authenticity of other holy books. These books are as follows: 1. The scriptures of Abraham, as Allah says: “The Scriptures of Ibrâhim (Abraham) and Mûsa (Moses).” (Al-A’la 87:19) 2. The Torah, revealed to Moses, as Allah says: ” Verily, We did send down the Taurât (Torah) [to Mûsa (Moses)], therein was guidance and light…” (Al-Ma’idah 5:44) 3. The Psalms revealed to David (Dawud) as Allah says: “and to Dawûd (David) We gave the Zabûr (Psalms).” (An-Nisa 4:163) 4. The Gospel (Injeel) revealed to Jesus (Issa), as Allah says: ” And in their footsteps, We sent ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), confirming the Taurât (Torah) that had come before him, and We gave him the Injeel (Gospel), in which was guidance and light…” (Al-Ma’idah 5:46) 5. The Pages (scripture) revealed to Moses (Moosa), as Allah says: “Or is he not informed with what is in the Pages (Scripture) of Mûsa (Moses),” (An-Najm 53:36) some of the interpreters of the Qur’an said that the pages of Moses are in Torah. 6. The Qur’an, which is the Last and the Greatest of the Heavenly Books which abrogated all previous books. It was revealed to the greatest Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam), Allah says: “Verily! It is We Who have sent down the Qur’ân to you (O Muhammad SAW) by stages.” (Al-Insan 76:23.) Based on the above, the heavenly books mentioned in the Qur’an are 6 or 5 if we consider that the Pages of Moses is another name of the Torah. Allah knows best.
