Vatican hopes to improve image in Ireland by stifling liberal secular dissent
Pope Benedict has appointed special Vatican investigators to travel to Ireland and restore the dignity of the Church . . . by cracking down on “liberal secular opinion” amongst clergy and parishioners.
Among other efforts, the nine-member team will direct priests not to publicly question official Church teaching, like the ban on abortion and refusal of Communion to divorced churchgoers who have remarried; direct theologians to stress the importance of weekly Mass and regular confession; evangelizing young people turned off by the pedophile sex scandals; and fighting secular and materialist attitudes in society.
Notably absent from the agenda is any effort to locate, remove from office, and prosecute sexually-abusive priests, or any effort to prosecute those who covered up for and enabled such predators.
