In Brief: Weekly Poll: Should Pope Benedict XVI be Arrested and Put on Trial?
There's a lot of talk about trying to have Pope Benedict XVI arrested and put on trial for the cover up of so much sexual abuse which has occurred in the Catholic Church. No one accuses the pope of having abused children himself, but he is accused of helping in the cover up a lot of the abuse — and that effectively makes him complicit in the origin crimes. What do you think about that? Should a pope — any pope — be arrested for something like this?

noone is above the law, pope or not. Just because he's the head of the church, does not mean he gets special privilages.
While I would love to see the church "fall." I want them to fall due to how ridiculous christianity is to begin with. Not because of a sex scandal. But, in the end, I have to agree with Ml08180 from above. No one is above the law. May justice prevail and may people open their eyes to the world. Take nothing at face value, especially religion. We've evolved, as a species, away from the need for such crude governance.
I have read Geoffrey Robertson's Special Penguin Edition arguments on this and they are compelling. Those priests have been 'forgiven' from within the Vatican through Papal law but almost never are they convicted (or arrested) within secular law. Catholics are threatened with excommunication for going to secular law-enforcement agencies about abuse. Whilst that may not seem like much to atheists who 'know' there is no afterlife, it is unthinkable for believers in the catholic faith. Put him in the dock, I say.
