An Egyptian Muslim is charged with setting fire to a 25-year-old Christian, murdering the victim’s father and wounding his younger brother over a rumor about a romance between the young Christian and the Muslim man’s sister.

The events took place in the village of Dmas Meet-Ghamr after a rumor spread of a relationship between the 25-year-old Copt, Shehata Sabri, and the sister of a Muslim man named Yasser Ahmed Qasim.

Qasim allegedly poured gasoline over Sabri and set him on fire as bystanders looked on in horror. The young Copt threw himself into the adjacent canal to try to put out the flames. The fire left burns all over his body, leading to his death.

When Sabri Shehata, the father of the victim, arrived, he, too, was attacked by a group of Muslims who stabbed him with knives and daggers; one stab penetrated his back and came out of his abdomen below the rib cage, resulting in his death.

The new appeal in the case of Lisa Miller and her 6-year-old daughter, Isabella, by Liberty Counsel asks for a determination on whether the Virginia Constitution is the controlling legal authority in the state.

The California Supreme Court may reveal Thursday whether it intends to uphold Proposition 8, and if so, whether an estimated 18,000 same-sex marriages will remain valid, during a high-stakes televised session that has sparked plans for demonstrations throughout the state.

One conservative constitutional scholar has said that the court could both affirm its historic May 15 ruling giving gays equality and uphold Proposition 8 by requiring the state to use a term other than “marriage” and apply it to all couples, gay and straight.

“The alternatives are for the court to accept Proposition 8 and authorize the people to rewrite the Constitution in a way that undermines a basic principle of equality,” said Pepperdine law professor Douglas Kmiec. If the court overturns Proposition 8, “that is the short course toward impeachment.”
