Featured Video: UN to BAN Free Speech with "Blasphemy" Resolution

This week’s featured video is truly horrifying. This CNN segment explains how the United Nation wants to make a binding resolution against “defamation of religion”. That is, requiring all member nations — including the United States — to outlaw public criticism of religion.

57 Islamic nations have been pushing this resolution as a group — the single largest voting bloc in the UN — saying that the resolution “is a major step toward sensitizing the international community on the serious impact of defamation of religions.”

Last year, this resolution was passed as a non-binding resolution by the UN’s General Assembly. This year, a binding resolution will be introduced sometime in March.

How would this work?

In India, which already has such laws, the editor of a newspaper was arrested because he reprinted an article from the U.K. The charge? “Hurting the religious feelings of Muslims.”

As you can see, the Islamists will stop at nothing to gain power throughout the world . . . including ignoring Americans’ right to free speech.

Even renowned atheist Christopher Hitchens appears on this CNN video, expressing his horror at this apparent eventuality.

  1. I actually agree, as any freedom-loving American should, that this anti-defamation law they’re trying to pass is just plain wrong and against everything we as Americans believe in. However, you have to concede that what it boils down to is they are a group of religious advocates trying to get everyone else to live by their rules. Switch the where and who, and tell me that doesn’t sound like the religious right in America. Don’t bs me with extraneous details. Just tell me you at least acknowledge your inherent motives are similar.

    • Christians are following the Word of God, and are the majority of Americans (78%, and once were closer to 99%).

Islamists are demon-worshipping invaders, who are establishing Sharia courts in Europe because they don’t like the laws, and who blow up cartoonists who offend their delicate sensibilities.

Sorry, we’re not at all similar. However, I’m glad to see we agree on the horribleness of this proposed binding UN resolution.

Yes, well some are simply following what they believe is the word of their God as well. The arguments you present though, are completely fallible. You say, “Christians are following the Word of God.” You give no examples of this. Yet, you give a specific example of what the “demon-worshiping [Islamist] invaders” are doing. And, to be clear again, they do not worship demons. They have a God as well. I know you know this, I am just making it a point to comment on this fact, because you are using rhetoric in place of solid argument.

I am not saying I agree with terrorists, which is what you might be thinking, or what you might try to accuse me of. I am asking you to step outside the box for a second and look at this issue from a different perspective. I am not asking that you change your mind about your beliefs. Just try to think about the world in someone else’s shoes for once. You are a product of your culture just like they are, and I am.

        • Allah is a moon-god, and a false idol. Google “allah moon god” and you will find the evidence.

What you are doing IS, in fact, telling Jenny to ignore God’s word and pretend that there are other gods.

Here’s a news flash for you, friend: No Christian will ever acknowledge that there might be “other ways to Heaven”, because the Bible specifically says that the only way to the Father is through Jesus Christ.

Muslims, in particular, threw out Christ when Muhammed made up his cult based on Allah, the moon god. Please recall that Islam was invented around 600 AD.

I would like to point out that as far as which religions are older and offshoots of which other religions, Christianity is somewhat of a spring chicken itself, to use your line of logic. So how come Christianity is right? It certainly wasn’t the first monotheistic religion, as monotheism was not the first form of religion. In fact, Christianity sprang from Judaism did it not?

Again, I am not saying I condone Muslim extremist behavior, and I do not condone Christian, or any other religious extremist behavior. Through evidence my conscience seeks out, I come to conclusions based on said evidence. I do not rigidly, and in the face of contradiction, continue to stubbornly deny that which is in front of me in the natural world. This is how I come to terms with my existence. As for how you come to terms with your existence, I should have no say in, and neither you me. All I implore is that you try to embrace the gift of humanity by looking at life through someone else’s eyes.

          • Christianity is the further development of Judaism, which begins with the Creation. Nothing predates Judaism.

When God saw that Judaism just wasn’t working, He came to earth in human form so He could allow Himself to be sacrificed to Himself and die temporarily, then resurrect Himself, in order to allow Himself to renegotiate the Covenant He’d made with the Jews.

In so doing, He eliminated animal sacrifices, but didn’t change much else of the Law.

So, no, nothing predates Christianity (Judaism aside). Only non-believers like you make that claim. How could anything predate it, when God created the universe only about 6,000 years ago?

Why would He go through all that trouble, if He wanted to renegotiate His contract with them? He’s God–the Almighty and the all powerful. He could have displayed His ultimate power, and let his subjects know once and for all, without a doubt, that there was a God, and He was It. Why would He even let the thought of the worship of other gods be a possibility? Why would a loving, caring God ask you to completely denounce your reality, ignoring that which is natural and observably right in front of you, for a strict doctrine based largely on laws that no longer apply to modern society?

If He gave man free will, why would He work so hard to steer them away with observable, natural evidence and cause them to ignore their reality in favor of blind faith? Why would He not give you evidence of his existence, but allow everything to the contrary to be thrown at you? Trials and tribulations that are testament to your faith? Again, why, if He loved all His children, and by definition, God created the universe and everything in it–every single being on this planet was created by Him–would He let the whole of humanity pay the price for the actions of two individuals? It seems wholly unfair and unjust.

          • Well, my friend, neither you nor I is God. We don’t know what He thinks, or why He does what He does.

All we know is, He does. And He died temporarily for all who would follow Him.

Another Sensible Person, Since They Seem So Rare On This Article

Dear lord… you people are insane.

Are you really completely unwilling to even think of issues from the other guy’s perspective? Completely lacking in respect for your fellow human beings?

    You people… scare me.

    • Hi, ASP. We changed editorial staff and direction here at the Paliban Daily on July 8, 2009. This post is from the “old guard”. However, it is one that I agree with; banning “blasphemy” is banning free speech.

You may wish to have a look at our About page and find out what we’re up to now!

As Voltaire said in his Essay on Tolerance, “Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too.” That includes the right to say what you believe. As Voltaire also said, “. . . I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.” http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/35376.html

  3. Indeed.

Of course… that doesn’t mean, on occassion, we can’t lampshade what they write by asking if they are utterly insane…

Sorry, I was actually responding to the conversation above (Green and Jenny), but somehow didn’t spot the ‘Reply’ button. I definitely agree with the article, myself.

  4. … That’s embarassing.

I was thinking in the back of my head… ‘This can’t be real. This is ridiculous. It’s gotta be a parody… right…?’

    Clearly, I need to click the ‘about’ link sooner. ^^;

    • ASP, the UN attempt to ban blasphemy was quite real.

      • Ah, yes, by ‘it can’t be real’ I was referring to the… er… how do I put it?

Apparent psychosis of certain members of the site.

You have no idea how much ‘it WAS all a parody’ (or at least mostly) comforts me…

Sorry, I seem to be being a bit too vague. So, once more from the top.

I believed the news link, but it was the attitude of the posters in the comments section that scared me.

And then, after a somewhat embarassing number of comments, I finally read ‘About’ and discover this site’s commenters (at least some) were actually making fun of said attitude, and not just being… well… self-parodying.

        • The attitude of certain posters SHOULD scare you. Because there are plenty of people who do espouse those attitudes.

Mr. Green, for example, is not a “member” of this site.

Perhaps you’d find the current featured video of interest . . . ?

          • … Can I pretend Green is just playing along?

            Please?

I just got a bit of faith in humanity back…

(Oh, and, if Jenny reads this: Sorry for thinking you were a psycho, I just didn’t get the joke ^^; )

… Oh my. Just watched the video.

Love the repeating buzzwords. I also much prefer this ‘disintegrating’ moral world to the insanity they espouse…

The way those people think scares me.

I do have to give them credit for the inspirational music, though. Really helped reaffirm my determination in the matter.
